Master Bedroom Fabric

One of many fun things about visiting my sister is that we do shopping neither of us have time to do.  Well, of course we shop, but there is so much variety as compared to what is available to me in Billings, that I jump at the chance for a shopping adventure.  Carol is my willing partner in crime, and we were in the mood to shop for fabric.

Off we went to a couple of stores that had great selections, and the prices were unbelievable.  I picked out a couple of remnants as samples for my master bedroom.  I wanted to bring them home for my husband’s approval, before I bought more to finish my master bedroom project.  We have very different tastes – he was not looking forward to pink, blue, green floral patterns, the girly stuff that I love.

Ever since we moved into our Montana home, I’ve been flustered about what color palette or theme to use.  We acquired our current bedroom furniture from my husband’s mother when she left her home.  Mrs. Solberg loved Danish modern – her home was flush with it.  I’ve come to love it, when I recently did some research and learned it is now considered a “mid-century” collectible – mid-century?? My sister and I just laughed and laughed.  My taste in furniture revolves around “turn-of-the-century” collectibles (turn of the 20th Century), many of which I bought through the years from flea markets and garage sales.  See, I was frugal, and not willing to part with the cash to buy fancier stuff.  Well, truth be told, I didn’t have any cash!  My logic was why should I pay $300 for a headboard and foot board when I found a perfectly suitable one for $40 – it’s still at my daughter’s house, and I won’t let her get rid of it!  Oh, and I had lots of hand me downs from my mom and dad.  I’m sure you have similar anecdotes – what are you going to do when you’re raising your family, are both poor and cheap?  Mrs. Solberg’s bedroom suite was made by Broyhill; the pattern name is Sculptura.  It’s solid mahogany.  (Psst – I’m looking for a king-sized headboard – feel free to contact me if you know of one available.)

Anyway, my sister found this floral fabric in neutral tones of grey, tan, cream, very light yellow, and a subtle periwinkle more on the blue side.  I fell in love with it, and found the contrasting stripe in the same remnant pile.  The floral was designed by Robert Allen “Naive Floral” in pewter.  The stripe is Braemore’s Kolar in pewter.  Lucky for me, my husband likes it, too – my husband commented that he doesn’t “love” fabric, but he loves me . . .

So, what are my project plans?  I’m going to make a valance for the bedroom window out of the two fabrics – floral on top and use the stripe for the border.  Then I want to make matching pillows with the floral on one side and the stripe on the other.  At Ikea, I found a feather roll pillow insert, so I’d like to make a cover for it out of the stripe.  And, if I have enough, I’ll make a coverlet for the foot of the bed – floral on one side and stripe on the other.

Wish me luck!  I’ll post photos as my project moves along.
